Sheet DW-02 · Common problems
These are four dishwasher problems we see often in Flower Mound kitchens, with the usual causes and one safe thing you can check before you call.
Long cycles are normal on newer energy-saving models, but a cycle that runs far past the usual time on your machine points to a heating or sensing problem.
If water reaches the dishwasher cold, the machine has to heat it itself and waits until it is hot enough.
A weak heating element or a bad temperature sensor makes the dishwasher wait for a temperature it never reaches.
A dirty or faulty soil sensor reads the water as dirty and adds rinses to every cycle.
Run the kitchen tap on hot until the water is warm before you start the dishwasher, and clean the filter at the bottom of the tub.
A door that will not latch stops the cycle from starting, and a door that drops open is a hazard in a busy kitchen.
The latch wears with daily use and stops catching the strike, so the dishwasher thinks the door is open.
Springs on each side hold the door's weight. When one breaks, the door drops open hard or will not stay up.
If the dishwasher has shifted under the counter, the strike no longer lines up with the latch.
Open the door halfway and let go. If it drops or pulls to one side, a spring or cable is likely broken. Check that the dishwasher is still screwed to the counter.
Cold dishes at the end of a cycle and poor drying usually mean the water or the drying air never got hot.
The element at the bottom of the tub heats the water and the drying air. A failed one leaves both cold.
If the sensor misreads the temperature, the control never turns the heater on.
The relay that powers the heater can wear out even when the element itself is fine.
Run the kitchen hot water first, then start a normal cycle with the heated dry option on. Do not touch the element at the bottom of the tub.
If water rises in the sink or the disposal when the dishwasher drains, the drain path is blocked somewhere between the two.
The small chrome cap on the sink deck can fill with food, so water spills into the sink instead of draining.
A new disposal comes with a plastic plug in the dishwasher inlet. If it was never knocked out, the dishwasher cannot drain.
The hose under the sink can kink or fill with grease and food.
Run the garbage disposal for a few seconds before you start the dishwasher. If you have an air gap cap on the sink, lift it off and clean it.
